Help Wanted! Listings

If you’ve been out and about town recently, you’ve probably noticed HELP WANTED signs in the windows and on the digital signs of almost every business. From waitstaff and bartenders to clerks, managers, and warehouse workers, there is a huge need for employees currently.

As the world begins to wake up from the sleepy (and scary) year that was 2020, we are seeing things come back online. That means events, business, and employment. Hospitality and supply jobs were significantly impacted during the pandemic. Hospitality and Tourism alone saw a decrease from 3,481 jobs in Kenosha County to 2,824 from 2019 to 2020. That is a hit of nearly 19%. Those jobs are now becoming available again.

What does work in the hospitality and tourism industry look like? It’s all about people!

Tourism is an around-the-clock industry, starting with the cooks preparing early morning breakfast and captains taking charters out on fishing boats for adventures on Lake Michigan. Then you’ve got managers and clerks at local shops, and even streetcar and bus drivers working for transit departments. Later the obvious bartenders, waitstaff, and attendants at restaurants, bars, and attractions, like comedy clubs or theatres, all play important roles. And as the evening goes on, managers at hotels and even night shift employees at gas stations and late-night eateries serve customers at all hours. Other jobs may include curators at museums, event planners, artists, sales directors, ski instructors, housekeepers, chefs, tour guides, shop keepers, small business owners, baristas, musicians, or maintenance staff.

Jobs in hospitality can be part time and seasonal. Sometimes they are positions that hire first-time workers. Some fit flexibly into busy schedules for second incomes or families needing alternate shifts. There is plenty of room to grown in these roles, though. It is not uncommon to start as a clerk at a hotel and move to a management position, or to start as a member of waitstaff at a restaurant and move to a management position. In a community like Kenosha, where we continue to grow and change, and where small business and entrepreneurship are celebrated, there are ample opportunities for individuals to move to fulltime employment in hospitality.

These jobs are rewarding, too. When people visit the Kenosha Area, the individuals in these front-line positions are often the first impression guests receive of our community. A friendly greeting upon check-in at a hotel, expert knowledge from a docent at a historical site, and scoop on a fun activity or event from a server at a café can all make a huge difference in how someone experiences a new destination. Sharing the place we call home with visitors is exciting and reminds us that there is so much to enjoy in our area.

If you are currently seeking employment – full or part time – consider a position in the hospitality industry. It’s a great team to be on.
